The Department of Microbiology was established in 2000. The thrust areas of the Department include extracellular enzymes of microbial source, plant growth promoting rhizobacteria, Antibiotic producing bacteria, microbial degradation of xenobiotics, probiotics, bio-preservation of food stuffs and clinical microbiology. The Department offers courses on general microbiology, microbial diversity, agricultural microbiology, environmental microbiology, industrial microbiology, food microbiology, immunology, medical microbiology, microbial genetics, fermentation technology and plant pathology.

The Department provides ample scope to students and faculties for academics and research. The class size is kept large enough to provide a vibrant learning environment but small enough to allow close interactions between the faculty and the students. Postgraduate students in the Department gain valuable research experience through research project, which is practical training of the subject, offered as a part of the course curriculum.

The department is well-equipped with modern laboratories to provide quality teaching and research opportunities for students. The Department has the facilities like UV-Visible Spectrophotometer, Thermocycler for PCR, Laminar Air flow chamber, Cooling Centrifuge, Autoclave, Light microscope, Water Bath, Orbital Shaker Incubator, Bacteriological Incubator, UV-Transilluminator, Hot Air Oven, Refrigerator, pH meter, Dry Bath, Weighing balance, Magnetic stirrer, Vortex and Gel electrophoresis apparatus etc.

A Microbiology graduate study provides a comprehensive learning of modern microbiology, ranging from environmental to medical to molecular microbiology. It is the study of life, infectious agents and biological processes at the microscopic level. A microbiologist is required in quality assurance of the product be it a food, pharmacy product or for initializing any tests have to be performed in vitro before testing in vivo or other higher living system.
