Department Of Microbiology

Introduction

Microbiology can be described as the study of microorganisms and their effects on other living beings. But in Scientific terms, Microbiology is the study and classification of various micro-organisms i.e. organisms which are very small in size and cannot be seen with naked eyes. The micro-organisms which are studied in Microbiology include algae, viruses, protozoan, molds and bacteria. The immense research and findings with the help of Microbiology has not only helped human beings to fight the ill-effects of these organisms but on the contrary, helped many industries produce products for the well fare and profit of other living beings. Microbiology is a wide field which offers many specializations for instance, Marine Microbiologists, Agricultural Microbiologists and Industrial Microbiologist etc.

Dept. of Microbiology every year set goals for the growth to perpetuate the excellence and innovations in academics in order to orient students to attain limitless heights in their careers. Development of the Dept. is indicated by its student’s strength, active interaction among other streams of the college and a follow up action of aims and strategy for its growth and achievement. Dept’s infrastructure is updated and upgraded annually. Innovative ideas in academics and its implementations is a top priority. The students are motivated to go in the field of research, by encouraging them for internship, trainings and dissertation further authenticating their work in the form of publication. They are offered to authenticate their work in the form of publication. The faculty also conducts sessions with the students to explain the values for self growth and follow ethics for the betterment of society. Owing to good coordination, knowledge and talents are disseminated through a series of inter disciplinary programmes and activities for the all-round growth of students.

Scope and Job Prospects

The scope of Graduate and Post Graduate courses in Microbiology is soaring due to many specializations and higher education courses available. A student can study further and gain specialized knowledge and education before stepping out into the corporate world. As far as job prospects are concerned, the requirement for professionals in Microbiology in industries such as health industry, food industry, research organizations, pharmaceuticals and chemical industries across the world are in great demand. Microbiology is a broad term studying microorganisms that includes Bacteriology, Virology, Molecular biology, Mycology, Parasitology, and other branches. A Microbiologist is a specialist required in quality assurance of the product be it a food, pharmacy product or for initializing any tests that have to be performed in vitro before testing in vivo or other higher living systems. Microbial Toxins and its effects
Dept. of Microbiology organized a Guest Lecture on the topic "Microbial Toxins and its effects" for Microbiology students. The keynote speakers were by Dr. U. K. Chauhan, Professor, Department of Biotechnology A.P.S. University, Rewa and Prof. S.N. Bagchi Department of Biosciences, Rani Durgawati University, Jabalpur on 17th Feb. 2014. They explained to the students about the uses of toxins as tools in Neurobiology and Cellular Biology. It was a very enriching experience for the students

Swine flu: Bio safety and Prevention
Dept. of Microbiology organized a Guest Lecture on the topic "Swine flu: Bio safety and Prevention" by Dr. Rajiv Nema, AIIMS, Bhopal on 21st Feb.2015 for B.Sc. and M.Sc. students. He explained to the students about H 1N1 influenza infection and how to protect ourselves from it. The lecture was very informative and the students were greatly benefitted from it.

A Guest Lecture on "Fermentation technology" was organized for the students of Microbiology on 20th Jan. 2017 by Mr. Kanhaiya Lal Patel, Microbiologist, B9 Beverages Pvt. Ltd. Indore. Mr. Patel explained to the students about the uses of fermentation in Industries and the importance of the role of Microbiologists in industry. On this occasion Principal Dr. P.N. M.P. Agrotonics Ltd.
An industrial visit to M.P. Agrotonics Ltd. Mandideep, for the students of B.Sc and M.Sc Microbiology was organized on 13th Feb. 2016. This company is a manufacturer and supplier of grain-based ready-to-eat health foods which are used as supplementary foods, therapeutic foods, emergency foods and functional foods. The Plant Manager Mr. C. H. Herbola, coordinated the whole visit personally and explained the functioning of fully automated manufacturing unit as well as microbiology lab. Students were amazed at the speed at which the process occurrs and how the automated systems work according to the requirements. The students were accompanied by HOD Mrs. Reena Antony, Dr. Tilottama Choudhury and Dr. Bhupendra Prasad. The industrial visit to MP Agrotonics Ltd. was an enriching experience for students in getting live exposure to manufacturing and quality check processes which can help them in their internships and future career prospects.

Regional science Center Bhopal
The students and faculty of Department of Microbiology, Career College visited Regional Science Center Bhopal on 22nd Feb 2019. Students got an opportunity to understand the basics of many discoveries and inventions in Science like the DNA model, Scanning Electron Microscope, Telescope etc. It was a very enriching experience and fruitful visit for the students.

To support the Swach Bharat Mission and to bestow a sense of responsibility towards the society the Department of Microbiology organized a “Clean and Green locality campaign” on 25th Mar 2015, wherein the students presented a street play on cleanliness in Sehatganj village.

A "Cancer Awareness Drive" was conducted on 13th Feb. 2016 in Bhojpur Village, Raisen (MP). Students of M.Sc. and B. Sc performed a street play comprising of group performance along with acting and song sequences. The audience often burst out into a round of applause and appreciation for the performers.

Swacch Bharat Abhiyan
On 16th October 2018 a social work was conducted in Nabibagh Village, Bhopal. The activity included speeches by students and teachers which addressed cleanliness issues in village, Swach Bharat Abhiyan and importance of hygiene and cleanliness among children. The village residents attended the said campaign .The students explained Swatch Bharat Abhiyan through self-painted posters for better understanding of the topic. Dept. of Microbiology organized a Workshop cum Training Program on the topic DNA Bioanalytics from 17th to 26th Feb. 2014 for B.Sc and M.Sc. Microbiology students. The training program included various Molecular Techniques like DNA Isolations, DNA Quantization, PCR, Agarose Gel Electrophoresis, Gel Analysis, and Report Writing.

Techniques in Genetic Engineering
The Dept. of Microbiology conducted a 3-Day Workshop cum Training Program on Techniques in Genetic engineering from 17th Sept to 19th Sept 2014 for outside as well as Career College students. The workshop aimed to provide basic idea and the future prospects in the field of Genetic Engineering, production of genetically modified organisms, ethical issues and general practices in the industrial as well as social arena. The students were exposed to the latest trends and techniques with the help of practical hands-on instrument handling clubbed with videos and lectures. The whole workshop was taken up by the faculty members of the Department of Microbiology- Mrs. Reena Antony (HOD), Dr. Tilottama Choudhury and Dr. Poonam Singh. The occasion was graced by the presence on Principal Dr. P.N Tiwari.

Medical Microbiology
A workshop on Techniques in Medical Microbiology was organized from 21-26 Sept 2015 in which the students were taught various techniques in Medical Microbiology like Clinical Microbial Isolations, Blood, Cytology, Radioimmunoassay, Widal test, VDRL test, and Immunoblotting. The workshop was very informative and students had a hands-on experience of the major techniques in medical field.

A Poster competition on World Water Day on the theme "Save water save earth" was organized by the Department of Microbiology to create awareness among students about importance of saving water and water conservation. Handling of Experimental Laboratory Animals
Dept. of Microbiology organized a Workshop on the topic Handling of Experimental Laboratory Animals from 9th -10th Feb. 2018 for B.Sc. and M.Sc. students. Licensed animal handling expert Mr. Rahul Saxena gave hands-on training to the students and also explained about the research work based on Microbiology including handling of wistar rats, dosage of formulations, prescribed killing methodology, and dissection of laboratory animals etc.

Business Strategies for Mushroom Cultivation
A 3-Day Workshop on Mushroom Cultivation was organized by Dept. of Microbiology from 29th Oct 2018 to 31st Oct 2018. An expert and Entrepreneur Dr. Juhi Sinha in Mushroom cultivation delivered a lecture on Mushroom production and supply in the local market. The students learnt mushroom spawn production technique and cultivated the oyster mushroom. They also prepared mushroom bags. Appox 30 students participated in this workshop. The program was coordinated by Dr. Aarti Kaushal and HOD Dr. Reena Antony.

Poster competition on Emerging Diseases in Society: A Microbiologist View
With a view of better understanding of the recent emerging diseases around the world and their impact on the society a poster competition was organized on 9th October 2018 which gave a platform to the students to showcase their view on this burning issue. The students made posters on the topics Dengue, Ebola Virus, Tuberculosis, Meningitis etc. Approx. 25 posters were presented by M.Sc. students which were seen and discussed by all students of the department including B.Sc and M.Sc students.

  • Placement: Ms. Rupal Rai was selected in Bureau of Indian Standards (BIS), Govt. of India.
  • Ms. Shamandeep Kaur Brar of M.Sc qualified CSIR-NET and enrolled for Ph.D. in Indian Institute of Soil Sciences, Bhopal.
  • Mr. Prem Kishor Kumar of M.Sc. a dissertation student was selected in Astra Leneca Pharma, London.
  • Dr. Bhupendra Prasad, Assistant Professor won third prize in paper presentation in Indian Science Congress Association held in Mysore.
  • College Topper : CASH AWARD - Ms. Ishu Chourasia
