This department was established in July 1998 and has a team of highly qualified and efficient faculties enriched with professional and research attitude. Chemistry is the study of matter and the transformations that occur in material things. It is the Basic Science that is fundamental and kernel to the study of all other Sciences. In a complex and changing world, chemistry is an integral part of all studies. They are vital in our everyday lives and will be vital in helping the world respond to some of its biggest challenges.

We offer M.Sc. Chemistry recognized by Barkatullah University, Bhopal, Madhya Pradesh. Master of Science in Chemistry is a Post Graduate Degree. The minimum time required to complete the course is two years. Candidates who have completed their Graduate level in Chemistry or related fields can join this course

Guest Lecture was organized by Dept. of Chemistry on 14th Feb. 2017. The Resource Person for the lecture was Dr. Bashirullah Sheik from NITTTR, Bhopal. He delivered a very knowledgeable and skill oriented lecture on the topic “QSAR and Applications”. Students were highly benefitted by the lecture.
Glassware Handling and Uses
Dept. of Chemistry had organized a guest lecture on 6th Feb. 2017 on the topic “Laboratory Glassware Handling and Uses” by Surendra Chaturesh, an Executive Sales from Borosil Glassworks Ltd., Mumbai, Maharashtra. The lecture aimed to explain how to handle and deal with laboratory glassware, its do’s and don’ts’ in the lab to prevent any accident. Lecture also discussed about the first aid measures to be taken in case of a laboratory accident. Speaker also showed some videos related to the contexts which were very informative. It was a great pleasure to hear an alumnus of ours. The session was quite interesting and intriguing.
Guest Lecture on -How to write an Effective Research Paper or an Article
Guest Lecture was jointly organized by Dept. of Chemistry and Dept. of Library & Information Science on 07thApril 2018. The Resource Person for the lecture was Dr. Sandeep Pathak from IISER, Bhopal. He delivered a very knowledgeable and research oriented lecture on, ‘How to write an Effective Research Paper or an Article’. Students were highly benefitted by this lecture.
Dept. of Chemistry had organized a Guest Lecture Program on ‘Quantum Mechanics’ on 27th Sept.2017. The Resource Person was Prof. Diwa Mishra, Dept. of Chemistry, Govt. Geetanjali Girls P.G. College, Shanti Nagar, Berasiya, Bhopal. Dr. P. N. Tiwari, Principal, Career College welcomed the Guest with a sapling. Students were benefitted from the expertise of Prof. Diwa Mishra. She discussed the basic nature and behavior of matter and energy on the atomic and subatomic level, quantum theory and also explained that in what way it differs from its classical counterpart. The lecture helped students to understand the basic concept and importance of Quantum Mechanics. Guest was also very much satisfied with the keen participation of students. She motivated students to take interest and involve in Quantum Mechanics for future prospects. The session ended with student clarifying their doubts and queries. All the faculty members of the department including Dr. Suparna Ghosh (HOD), Dr. Shweta Sharma, Dr. Anita K, Dr. Ruchi Dubey Sharma, Ms. Anita Singh and all the students of I and III Sem of M.Sc. (Chemistry) along with B.Sc. V Sem (Maths) were present during the lecture.
OZONE LAYER PRESERVATION DAY CELEBRATION
In pace with previous years this year also Department of Chemistry celebrated the Ozone Layer Preservation day on 18/09/17 with great enthusiasm. Dr. Vipin Vyas from Department of Environmental Science, BU, Bhopal graced the occasion as Chief Guest and presented a lecture on the topic, “Environmental Protection”. The Department also organized the following completions:
1. Slogan Writing Competition on the topic – “Clean India, Green India”
2. Poster Making Competition on the topic -“Environment Awareness”.
3. Hand painting Competition on the theme- “Natural beauty of M.P.”
4. Movie making on the theme-Green & eco-friendly College campus
Computer Applications and Software Tools for Chemistry
Dept. of Chemistry organized an expert lecture on ‘Computer Applications and Software Tools for Chemistry’ on 14th May 2019 for M. Sc. II Sem. students. Dr. Chhaya Makhijani Asst. Prof., Department of Computer Science, Sri Sathya Sai College for Women, Bhopal was invited as the subject expert for this lecture. Students learned about the computer applications used in chemistry. HOD, Dept. of Chemistry Dr. Suparna Ghosh welcomed Dr. Chhaya Makhijani and introduced the guest. Students were immensely enlightened on the above mentioned topic by this informative lecture.
National Science Day
Dept. of Chemistry celebrated “National Science Day” on 28th Feb. 2019 in collaboration with Tathya Forensic Wing Federation (TFWF), New Delhi. Mr. Sanjay Mishra Director, TFWF delivered a wonderful presentation on “Scientific Gazettes and Cyber Security” and our Alumni Mr. Pushkal Pandey (2010 batch), Director Entrepreneur TFWF gave insight on “Role of Forensic Science”. Approx. 130 students from Life Science Dept. were highly benefitted from the deliberations and enjoyed the program.
A competition, “Kabad se Jugad” was also organized on this occasion and prizes were distributed.
Tathya Forensic Wing Federation,New Delhifelicitated the students who have participated at Regional Science Centre, Bhopal in National Science Project Competition with awards.
The beauty of program was that the entire program was coordinated by students’ themselves.
Dept. of Chemistry organized Four Days Guest Lecture Series on “Group Theory” for M.Sc. students. The Resource person Mr. Shailendra Agarwal, an alumni of our college. He is the Director of ‘Kailash Institute of Chemical Sciences’, a pioneer in coaching NET/GATE/LS aspirants. Apart from the Group theory lectures, he also discussed about the research avenues after M.Sc. Chemistry and the need to pursue research in pure sciences. M.Sc. I and III Sem students attended the series which were very interesting and informative.
Dept. of Chem. organized a visit to ‘Rio-Oxy Plant’; a water distillery; Khamkheda, Berasiya on 14th Sept. 2016. The plant produces RO grade water through five stage purification process. Students got acquainted with the process of water purification as well as bottle production. About 35 students from various departments of the college from both UG and PG courses along with the teachers. The visit was coordinated by the HOD, Dr. Suparna Ghosh and was an enriching experience for the students.
Visit to Sanchi Dugdh Sangh
Dept. of Chemistry has organized a visit to Sanchi Dugdh Sangh, Habibganj, Bhopal on 04 April 2018. The Dugdh Sangh’s Representative explained the entire process from collection of milk through cattleman, processing into different grades of milk for fat distribution, checking of adulteration, packing to transportation and supply to users. Students and teachers gained knowledge about the practical aspects of processing, pasteurization and packaging of milk. It was a wonderful experience to see the huge machineries working for processing and to know how different amount of fats in different grades are maintained. The staff of Sanchi Dugdh Sangh also described about the different units in MP namely Indore, Gwalior, Ujjain and Jabalpur along with Bhopal.
Indian Institute of Science Education and Research
Dept. of Chemistry organized an educational visit to ‘Indian Institute of Science Education and Research’, Bhopal on 1st Dec.2017. The students of M.Sc. visited the Central lab, Professional lab, UG and PG labs of Chemical Science Dept. Dr. Sanjay Parihar, Scientist of IISER Chemistry Co-ordinated the visit .The Senior Scientists of each department demonstrated the working of the instruments and explained the theoretical principles.Students were benefitted by this demonstration of highly sophisticated research instruments like NMR, Mass spectrophotometer, SEM, AFM and many more.App. 25 students were benefitted by the visit.The knowledge of the faculties was enriched by this visit.
Andritz Hydro Pvt. Ltd., Mandideep
Dept. of Chemistry organized an Industrial visit to ‘Andritz Hydro Pvt. Ltd ‘, Mandideep for UG and PG students on 4th May 2019. Students got an opportunity to understand the process of generators, gained knowledge about the characteristics of the alloys used in them and their features. Students also understood various types of generators: Hydro and Turbo generators and diversity in the methodology. The purpose of the visit was to explain the utility of Chemistry in the industrial sector. And also give them an insight into the chemical theories for future reference.
A social visit to Anna Nagar slum had been organized by Dept. of Chemistry on 25th Feb. 2017. The students explained the importance of personal hygiene and environmental conservation to the people by presenting a Nukkad Natak. The activity also emphasized against the use polythenes and thus support the movement initiated by government. Students were quite excited and tried to create awareness among the people of slum area and were hopeful of bringing about a positive change in their mindset.
Health, Hygiene & Cleanliness
It is a matter of immense pleasure that Dept. of Chemistry and Dept. of Library Science had organized a social visit to slum area of Anna Nagar, Govindpura in the month of Nov. 2016. The purpose of visit was to share love and spread happiness among the poor children. On the occasion, the children were explained about the health, hygiene & cleanliness of their surrounding and sweets were distributed. App. 25 students and faculty from Dept. of Chemistry and Dept. of Library Science participated in this activity with great excitement and enthusiasm.
Dept. of Chemistry in collaboration with Dept. of Pathology and Dept. of Library & Information Science had conducted the ISR Activity on 12th Apr. 2018 at Govt. Middle School, Security line, Govindpura, Bhopal. The activity was aimed to make Government school children aware of nutritional value of a diet. During the activity body weight, height was examined. They were explained about the importance of eating a balanced diet for the proper growth and development of the body. Students as well teachers of School extended their cooperation during the activity.
Joy of Giving
Dept. of Chemistry and Dept. of Library and Information Science has celebrated “Joy of Giving” and distributed sweets, toys, lunch boxes and clothesas a part of ISR activity program as Diwali celebration for Orphan / Semi Orphan children and Widow Women with Vihaan Care MPNP+& Support Program in Madhya Pradesh at ART Center, Hamidia Hospital, Bhopal on 13/10/17. The activity ‘Joy of Giving’ gave a satisfaction for the blessings by god to be in position to help underprivileged people and brought smile to their faces. Around 30 students of M.Sc. Chemistry joined hands in the venture.
Need of Education And Hygiene
Department of Chemistry along with Department of Library Science and N.S.S. celebrated 125th Birthday of Dr. S.R. Rangathan (Father of library Science) on 12th Aug 2017. On this occasion rally was organized and the students and faculty members visited the nearby Anna Nagar Slum, Govindpura, Bhopal. They interacted with children of age group 5-15 years and their parents to make them understand about the need of education and hygiene. Notebooks, pencils and confectioneries were distributed to the slum children.
Our Constitution: Merits & Demerits
Dept. of Chemistry celebrated Ambedkar Jayanti on 15 Apr. 2019. On this occasion, Prof. P. K. Gupta from Career College of Law delivered a talk on “Uniqueness of our Constitution and Role of Dr. B. R. Ambedkar”. Students actively participated in the discussion on the topic “Our Constitution: Merits & Demerits” voluntarily by putting their views in front of the audience. A large number of students of B. Sc. and M. Sc. enthusiastically involved in the programme.
Voting Awareness Rally
Dept. of Chemistry and Library & Information Science organized an awareness rally to create an awareness among the mass about our right to cast vote on 27th Mar. 2019. Students interacted with the residents of Anna Nagar and emphasize the need to cast their vote for the right candidate and urged them not get influenced by any particular person or any other fake promises. Aim of this activity was to encourage the voters for fair and right voting. On this occasion, students made a large human chain to convey their message to the public.
Dept. of Chemistry & Dept. of Library and Information Science had organised an ISR activity at Boys Hostel Habibia, Railway Station on 18th March 2019. The activity was aimed to create awareness amongst the children about the harm caused by chemical colors and conservation of water by avoiding its wastage during Holi Festival as well to share happiness among the homeless children of the hostel. Herbal colours are safe in all respects and add beauty and delight to the festival of colours.
Students of Career College interacted with the children distributed sweets and celebrated Holi with Herbal Gulal on this occasion. Students developed a sense of responsibility towards deprived children of society and promised to keep helping them to the best of their abilities.
Sparsh Bharat Mission
Dept. of Chemistry along with NSS unit of Career College organized an “Awareness Programme” dated 8th Dec.2018 on substance abuse (alcohol/drugs) by a nonprofit Christian organization, ”Angelo” (ICPF) under “Sparsh Bharat Mission”. The programme conveyed a strong message against drug/alcohol abuse through an excellent PPT and enacted musical drama by the members of ‘Angelo’. It beautifully depicts the ill effects of the addiction of tobacco, alcohol, drug and also internet.
More than 150 students and faculty members were involved in the program. After the programme, the students gave oral feedback about their experience and pledged to stop such abuse practices prevalent in society for human growth.
Skill Development cum Short Term Certificate Course was organized by Dept. of Chemistry from 13th to 15th Feb. 2017.
On the first day of the three day event, students learnt about the QSAR basics and hand on practice on Chemsketch Software; the skill was taught by Dr. Shweta Sharma.
On the second day, a lecture was delivered by Dr. Bashirullah Sheik from NITTTR, Bhopal on the topic, “QSAR and Applications”.
On the third day, Dr. Anita K gave lecture and practice on DRAGON and NCSS software.
Photochemical Extraction & Identification By Spectrophotometry And Estimation By Flame Photometry
With great enthusiasm Dept. of Chemistry had organized a ‘Two Day Skill Development Program’ on the topic, “Photochemical Extraction & Identification By Spectrophotometry And Estimation By Flame Photometry” in collaboration with SCAN Lab on 5th - 6th Dec. 2016. Mr. Prabhat Jain, Director Scan Lab, was the Resource Person. Students of M. Sc. Chemistry & B. Sc. V Sem. participated in the program and learnt about the Spectrophotometry and Flame Photometry with reference to Phytochemical Analysis and identification of organic compound present in plant species specifically Phenols and Flavonoids. Students are immensely benefitted by such hands on training given to them by the dept from time to time.
Analysis and Testing of Lubricants
Skill Development cum Short Term Certificate Course was organized by Dept. of Chemistry from 20/04/18 to 25/04/18 in collaboration with University Institute of Technology, Barkatullah University, Bhopal.
The course started with a brief introduction lecture by Dr. Ruchi Dubey Sharma, Dept. of Chemistry on 20/04/18 about ‘Properties of Lubricant, Testing of Properties and Analytical Applications’. An insight into basic instrumentation, principle, and procedure was explained to students for testing of lubricants.
On 21/04/18, Dr. Suparna Ghosh and Dr. Shweta Sharma gave practical demonstration to examine various properties of oil(s) which make them suitable to be used as lubricant and to check adulterations.
Students got hands on practice on 24/04/18 & 25/04/18 for ‘Analysis and Testing of Lubricants’ at University Institute of Technology, Barkatullah University, Bhopal where Dr. Sulbha Amlathe, HOD, Applied Science, UIT, BU extended her expertise to students and facilitate them to work in lab.
The course was aimed to enhance analytical skills among the students and to enable them to become proficient in industrial techniques.
Problem Solving for Chemistry using ‘C’ language
Dept. of Chemistry organized a workshop on “Problem Solving for Chemistry using ‘C’ language” from 15th-22nd May 2019 for M. Sc. II semester students. Dr. Chhaya Makhijani Asst. Prof., Department of Computer Science, Sri Sathya Sai College for Women, Bhopal was invited as Resource Person for the workshop. Students learned about principles of Programming, Algorithms and flow charts related to important equations in Chemistry. Principal Dr. P. N. Tiwari gave a welcome speech and encouraged the students and faculty members by his gracious presence.
