Introduction

The Dept. of Botany is amongst the leading departments of Career College. It specializes in the field of teaching and research in Plant Sciences. The Dept. strives towards achieving goals of excellence for which teachers in particular need to play a very responsible role. It is a long journey to tread. The session commences with the preparation of academic calendar that gives detailed information regarding the seminars, workshops, guest lectures, internships, trainings, excursion, projects, tests, assignments and presentations etc. to be organized by the Dept. Further, this calendar is adhered to achieve its objectives. The students gain a lot from these activities as these practices boost their confidence and enrich them in a number of ways. The department has also established collaborations with leading research institutes of India. A Botanical and Bonsai garden is maintained which is a witness to the glorious era of the Botany Dept. Career in Botany can be highly rewarding for those who are allured with the aesthetic beauty of nature and flora. With the challenges posed by environmental issues on existing flora, the significance and scope of Botany has widened far more than before.

    Eligibility

    Career in Botany can be highly rewarding for those, who are allured with the aesthetic beauty of nature and flora. Botany is one of the most preferred choices to study among the science students in India. One can choose to study Botany from graduation level. B.Sc is offered by Dept of Botany of our institute. After completing graduation, one can opt for postgraduate level study in the field. Doctorate level of education is also offered in Botany by our university. To get admission into B.Sc, a student having passed 10+2 from science stream with Biology as a mainstream subject is eligible. While for the M.Sc. postgraduate course students must be graduates in the same field. With the challenges posed by environmental issues on existing flora the significance and scope of Botany has widened ever than before.

Courses

Master in Science: (M.Sc Botany), Duration: 2 Year Course.

  • • M.Sc. - student must be Graduate (B.Sc. with one subject as Botany).

Bachelor in Science: (B.Sc.), Duration: 3 Year Course.

  • • B.Sc. - student having passed 10+2 with 33% marks (Science stream with Biology as the main subject) is eligible.
  • • We offer courses as mentioned below which are recognized by Barkatullah University, Bhopal, Madhya Pradesh, India.

A Guest lecture was organized by Department of Botany on 7/10/13 for UG and PG students. The topic of the lecture was “Biodiversity and conservation”. The lecture was delivered by Dr. Neerja Shrivastava Prof. Department of Zoology, Motilal Vigyan Mahavidyalaya, Bhopal. The topic of the lecture was very interesting. During this lecture a short movie based on Tiger Reserve Pataya was also shown to the students.

MFP PARC BHOPAL
Botany is a subject in which excursions is a part of the curriculum, keeping this in mind the Department organized a trip on 7/10/13 to MFP PARC BHOPAL. MFP-PARC Co-operative Federation Ltd. is the State level apex body of primary & district level, co-operative bodies working for the benefit of forest dwellers who are earning their livelihood by collecting of minor forest produce. A team of students led by HOD and other staff members visited Minor produce and processing centre, Barkheda Pathani, Bhopal.

Botany is a subject in which excursions are a part of the curriculum. Keeping this in mind, the Department organized a trip on 29/12/14 to MFP PARC BHOPAL. MFP-PARC Co-operative Federation Ltd. is a State level apex body of primary & district level cooperative bodies working for the benefit of forest dwellers who earn their living from the collection of minor forest produce. A team of students along with their HOD and other staff members visited Minor Forest Produce and Processing Centre, Barkheda Pathani, Bhopal.

Botany is a subject in which excursions are part of the curriculum and keeping this in mind the Department organized a tour from Bhopal to Amritsar and Manali on 22-28/3/17.This tour was organized for students of UG and PG (Life Sciences). Minor Forest Produce and Processing Center Bhopal
The Department of Botany conducted a research lab visit to Minor Forest Produce and Processing Center Bhopal MP (A Unit of M.P. State Minor Forest Produce (Trade & Development) Cooperative Federation) on 02/9/16. Approx. 50 Students of B.Sc. & M.Sc. Botany with two faculty members visited MFP-PARC and got acquainted with the production and processing of medicinal plants as well as other forest products.

Visit to Horticulture Department
Botany is a subject in which excursions are part of curriculum. Keeping this in mind, the Dept organized an excursion to Model Nursery Kanhasaiya Village developed by Horticulture Dept, Bhopal on 13thFeb18. Students of UG and PG Botany got acquainted with different types of poly houses, drip irrigation, vegetative propagation, new technologies of seedling development, cold storage and mulching etc. It was a very enriching experience for the students

Minor Forest Produce and Processing Center
The Dept of Botany organized a Research Lab visit to "Minor Forest Produce and Processing Center", Bhopal MP. (A Unit of M.P. State Minor Forest Produce (Trade & Development) Cooperative Federation) on 22th Dec.2018. Students of B.Sc and M.Sc Botany along with two faculty members visited MFP-PARC and got acquainted with the production and processing of medicinal plants as well as other forest products. An Environmental Awareness Camp was organized by Department of Botany on 7/10/13. This camp was organized at Career College Bhopal. Students of B.Sc enacted nukkad natak (street play) during this event. The play was quite inspiring. Plantation was done by Principal, Director, Vice Principal, faculty and students.

Bonsai techniques
Workshop on Bonsai techniques is a regular practice of the Department of Botany. This year a workshop on THE SECRET TECHNIQUES OF BONSAI was conducted by Department of Botany on 15/09/2014.The resource persons were Dr. Santosh Chaudhary, Eye specialist Katju Hospital Bhopal and President of Bonsai Society of M.P. Miss Anuradha Athotra, Vice President of Bonsai society of M.P. Approximately 35 students from UG, PG classes and Research Scholars from other institutes attended the workshop. Students prepared a project report on the workshop. The workshop was well appreciated by everyone present.

A skill development certificate course on Phytochemical Extraction and Screening was conducted for UG and PG students of various disciplines of Bioscience who wish to learn the rationale, design strategies, methods and other aspects of plant chemical extraction and analysis. Environment and Technology Innovations 2016
Two day National Seminar on “Environment and Technology Innovations 2016” was organized by Dept. of Botany, Career College on 5th and 6th Feb. 2016. This Seminar was sponsored by EPCO, Bhopal and MPCST, Bhopal and in collaboration with ISCA. The Seminar commenced with the Inaugural Ceremony which entailed the customary practice of lighting the lamp followed by Saraswati Vandana recital by the students. The dais was marked by the presence of esteemed Hon’ble Chief Guest Prof Murlidhar Tiwari, Vice Chancellor, Barkatullah University Bhopal, Guest of Honour Dr. Ajatshatru Shrivastava, Executive Director EPCO Bhopal, Dr. Akhilesh Pandey, Chairman MP Private University Regulatory Commission Bhopal, Dr. Santosh Kumar Ex VC Barkatullah University Bhopal, Dr. JP Shukla, Convenor Indian Science Congress Association Bhopal Chapter, Shri Vishnu Rajoria Patron and Founder Chairman Governing Body Career Society Bhopal and Dr. P N Tiwari Principal Career College Bhopal. The welcome address was given by Shri Vishnu Rajoria, Patron and Chairman Governing Body, Career Group of Institutes and Prof. PN Tiwari Principal .They welcomed the dignitaries, Chief Guest, Guest of Honour and other participants. Chief Guest was presented a sapling by Mr. Manish Rajoria, Vice President Career Society Bhopal, Mr. Ashish Rajoria, Secretary Career Society Bhopal, Prof Pradeep Jain, Director Career Group of Institutions Bhopal and Joint Organising Secretaries of Seminar Dr. Ruchi Acharya and Dr. Bhawna Sharma. Objective and theme was discussed by Dr. Jaswinder Mehta, HOD, Dept. of Botany and organizing secretary of Seminar. In her address, she outlined the details of the Seminar. The ceremony further continued with our Chief Guest address sharing his wisdom and years of experience by imparting necessary expertise regarding Environment. Vote of thanks of inaugural session was given by Dr. Jaswinder Mehta, HOD Dept. of Botany. First session of Seminar was chaired by Dr. Jamalluddin, Emeritus Scientist Rani Durgawati University Jabalpur. Expert talk was given by Dr. Arun Om Prakash Arya, HOD; Dept. of Environmental Sciences Dr. Arun gave a lecture on ‘Innovative methods to manage fungal bio-pollutants posing threat to plants, human beings and cultural heritage’. He highlighted on six common pollutants. Second session was chaired by Dr. Suchitra Banerjee, Prof and HOD, Dept. of Biotechnology Institute of Excellence in Higher Education, Bhopal and Keynote Speaker was Dr. Saroj Rangrekar, Prof MANIT Bhopal. In her lecture she gave an overview on Energy Scenario –Renewable energy options issues and challenges, Issues related preserve fossil fuels, Present power scenario, total renewable energy power supply condition in India, biogas plant and she also gave information about zero building a panel in which LED light was used. Third Session was chaired by Dr. Pratibha Singh, HOD, Dept. of Botany, Sarojini Naidu Govt. Girls PG College Bhopal and the speaker was Dr. OP Madguni, Prof, Indian Institute of Forest Management Bhopal. Dr. Madguni expressed his view on Biodegradable Waste in Bhopal and Biodegradable plants. Next invited speaker was Dr. AL Ramanathan, Prof, School of Environmental Sciences, Jawahar Lal Nehru University Delhi. Dr. A.L Ramanathan focused on Climate Change and Glacier Dynamics. Fourth session was Chaired By Dr. Kirti Jain, HOD, Department of Botany, Govt, Benajeer College Bhopal and Invited talk was given by Dr. Jamalludin on bioreclamation of mine spoils. Poster and oral presentations were done by Students, Research Scholars and Professors. About 15 research papers were presented and 40 young scientists presented their views through the medium of poster also. In Poster Presentation - • Research Scholar Category- First prize was grabbed by Aliba Rawat from Jawahar Lal Nehru Cancer Hospital Bhopal. • Second prize- won by Gresh Chander and Basharat Ali from Jawahar Lal Nehru Cancer Hospital Bhopal. • Student category- First prize was won by Kusum Tanwar and Smriti Rohilla from Regional Institute of Education Bhopal, • Second prize- won by Sharmishta Dwivedi and Priya Sharma from IET DAVV Indore. • Third prize- won by Arpit Sarawgi and Piyush from DAVV Indore. In Oral Presentation - • Professor category- First prize was won by Dr N Ganesh, JNCH Bhopal. • Second prize- Grabbed by Dr Sunil Singh, Govt College Kuwai. • Third prize- won by Dr Sugandha Singh, Sant Hirdaram Girls College Bairagarh, Bhopal. Research Scholar Category- • First prize- won by Ms Sarah Ali from IIFM Bhopal, Ms Ritu Verma, Cancer Hospital Bhopal • Second prize- won by Mrs Alibha Rawat, JNCH Bhopal. Prizes were distributed by Chief Guest of Valedictory Programme Prof KS Tiwari, Director Indira Gandhi National Open University, Mr. Ashish Rajoria, Secretary Career Society, Dr. PN Tiwari, Principal Career College, Prof Pradeep Jain, Director Career group of institutions and Prof J P Vyas Principal Career College of Law. On this occasion all the College staff and around 450 delegates, research scholars and students were present.

Nursery Development, Management and Propagation Techniques
Two days ‘Skill Development Programme’ was conducted on 19th-20th Sept. 2016 for UG and PG students. First day topic of the Programme was ‘Nursery Development, Management and Propagation Techniques’. The resource person was Dr R.S. Yadav, Ex Director Horticulture Dept. Students were imparted knowledge of Polyhouse, hybrid seeds and propagation techniques. Second day Programme was on ‘Bonsai Techniques’. Students learnt about the different types, styles and preparation of Bonsai etc. Resource Persons were Dr. Santosh Chaudhary, President, Bonsai Society of M.P. and Mr. Yogesh Nirgudkar, Bonsai expert and member of Bonsai Society of M.P. Dr. P. N. Tiwari, Principal and Professor Pradeep Jain, Director, Career College welcomed the dignitaries with saplings and blessed the students with their motivational words. Dr. Jaswinder Mehta HOD discussed the theme of the programme that was very well appreciated by all presence.

A Bonsai Workshop was organized by Dept. of Botany on 16th Sept. 2017. The workshop was started by paying tribute to late Smt. Upkar Rajoria Ji (founder of the Bonsai Garden of the college). This was followed by the presentation on Bonsai Techniques given by Dr. Santosh Choudhary, President of Bonsai Society of M.P. During the workshop the students of various streams learnt about the selection of appropriate pots to grow the plants, soil preparation, its proper cutting, care and maintenance. Students prepared many Bonsai Plants by taking into account a proper combination of soil for preparation of Bonsai Plants. The Bonsai expert also explained how a piece of rock, cluster of stones etc. can be converted in to useful pots for making beautiful Bonsais’.
